Twenty miles an hour, and what it does to a car
Wales changed the way its towns drive on 17 September 2023, when the default limit on restricted roads dropped from 30 to 20 miles an hour, the first UK nation to do it. Most of residential Cardiff is 20 now, and a car driven mile after mile in third gear at low revs is a car whose engine rarely gets properly warm, which is hard on exhausts, batteries and diesel filters over a winter. There is no Clean Air Zone here, so nothing charges an older car off the road; it simply wears out in a new pattern. When the next repair bill is more than the car is worth as scrap, that is usually the moment to take a quote.
Did you know? Wales has only ever had one car maker, and it was up the valley Gilbern was founded in 1959 by Giles Smith, a butcher from Llantwit Fardre, and Bernard Friese, a German engineer and former prisoner of war who knew about glass fibre. The first car was built in a shed behind the butcher's shop, and a pear tree had to come down to get it out. The name is the front of both men's: GILes and BERNard. Production moved to the old Red Ash Colliery site nearby, where 55 or 60 people, most of them ex-miners, turned out about three cars a week. VAT on kit cars finished the company in 1973 after roughly 1,000 had been built. Gilbern remains the only company ever to build complete cars in Wales. |
