Sheffield's Clean Air Zone, and why your car is not charged
Sheffield has had a Clean Air Zone since 27 February 2023, covering the city centre inside the inner ring road. It is a Class C zone, which means private cars and motorbikes are not charged whatever their age; the daily charge falls on older vans, taxis and private hire cars at £10, and on buses, coaches and lorries at £50 (Sheffield City Council, checked September 2026). So an old car in Sheffield is not being driven off the road by a charge, it is being driven off by the hills. The climbs out of the centre to Crookes, Walkley and Gleadless are hard on clutches and brakes in a way flat cities never are, and the winter grit does the rest to sills and brake lines. Only three are known to survive. One sits in Kelham Island Museum in Sheffield, one is in Sydney, and the third was restored by Lord Riverdale as what he called his last tribute to the city, the only attempt Sheffield ever made to build a quality motor car.
