Reading, a town with a ring road that took twenty years
Reading's Inner Distribution Road opened in 1969 as the answer to a town centre that had been gridlocked for a decade, and it took until 1989 to finish because the money ran out halfway round (Reading Borough Council records; Berkshire Family History Society). Whole streets in Coley and around Castle Street came down to build it. Today the IDR, the A33 and the three M4 junctions carry a town that has more jobs than residents, so the commute runs both ways and the queues run both ways with it. Stop-start miles inside the ring road are the ones that finish a clutch and a set of brakes long before the engine is tired. Did you know? Reading built bodies for Rolls-Royce William Vincent started making horse-drawn carriages in 1805 and by 1899 the firm had built its first car body on Castle Street. In 1906 it supplied the coachwork for a Rolls-Royce, and through the 1920s and 30s Vincent of Reading showed at the London Motor Show every year, claiming the largest and most modern coachworks in the country and building bodies for Austin and Sunbeam. The Castle Street works stood in exactly the part of town the ring road later cut through. Reading kept building cars in small numbers long after: Buckler sports cars from 1947, and the 1977 Fittipaldi Formula One car was assembled in a former fire station yard in Caversham. |
