The most expensive streets in Britain to drive an old car down
Oxford runs the only Zero Emission Zone in the country. Since 28 February 2022 nine streets in the city centre have charged every vehicle that is not electric, hybrids included, between seven in the morning and seven at night. The charge started at £2 to £10 a day depending on emissions and doubled in August 2025, so an older petrol or diesel car now pays £20 a day to drive down Queen Street or Cornmarket (Oxfordshire County Council, checked September 2026). No other scheme in Britain charges a car that much. For anyone living inside or near those streets with a car that fails the standard, the sums stop working quickly. When the zone and the next repair bill together come to more than the car is worth as scrap, that is usually the moment to take a quote.
Did you know? Oxford built more cars than it did anything else William Morris started with a bicycle repair shop on the High in 1893 and built his first car at Cowley in 1913. By the 1920s Morris Motors was the biggest car maker in Britain, and Cowley turned out the Bullnose, the Minor and, later, the Morris Mini. The works are still there. Cowley now builds the modern Mini, which makes Oxford one of the very few British cities still making cars on the same site it started on, more than a century later. |

Scrapping a car in Oxford
Your car goes to a licensed Authorised Treatment Facility, regulated by the Environment Agency, and you receive a Certificate of Destruction confirming it has been legally recycled. Cash payment for scrap vehicles is banned by law, so payment is made by bank transfer, typically the same day, and the DVLA is notified as standard. The whole sequence is covered in the five steps to scrapping a car, and how we compare with the rest explains the guarantee behind the price. If the paperwork is missing, the V5C guide covers what else will do.
