A town that solved traffic with more roundabouts
Swindon has more roundabouts than almost anywhere in Britain, and the most famous of them is the Magic Roundabout: five mini-roundabouts in a ring around a sixth that runs the other way. It opened in 1972 and it still works, which is the surprising part, with a better safety record than its reputation suggests. Add the M4 at junctions 15 and 16 and you have a town where cars cover big miles at speed between short bursts of low-gear manoeuvring. The Magic Roundabout needed police with loudspeakers When the junction opened in September 1972 it was officially called County Islands, and it replaced the old Drove Roundabout, which had a bad accident record. Frank Blackmore of the Transport and Road Research Laboratory had already built Britain's first mini-roundabout in Peterborough in 1969, standing beside it on opening day with a loud-hailer to tell drivers what to do. Swindon got the same treatment: police were posted at each of the five mini-roundabouts until drivers worked it out. The nickname came from the children's television programme of the day and became the official name in the 1980s. |
