The A303, the stones, and the tunnel that never got built
Everyone who drives west past Salisbury knows the moment the A303 drops to single carriageway beside Stonehenge and stops. A £1.7bn scheme to put two miles of it underground was approved in 2023, cancelled in 2024 as an unfunded commitment, and formally revoked in 2026 (Department for Transport). So the queue stays. There is no Clean Air Zone in Wiltshire either, so nothing charges an older car; it is the crawl, the rat runs and the miles that wear one out. Did you know? Salisbury built its own car, and one was rescued from a scrapyard Two clockmakers, William and Albert Burden, went into partnership with a landowner called Percy Dean in 1902 and started making motor engines in Salisbury. The first Scout car followed in 1905, and Dean took one to the Isle of Man for the very first Tourist Trophy race that year. He ran out of fuel 23 miles from the finish. By 1912 Scout employed more than 150 men and each car took six to eight weeks to build. The First World War took the money and the workforce, and the company was wound up in 1921. One 1912 Scout survives because somebody pulled it out of a scrapyard in Honiton in the 1950s; it is now in a museum. |
