Southampton and the Clean Air Zone that never charged
Southampton was one of the five cities ordered to bring in a Clean Air Zone, and in 2020 it became the one that chose not to charge anyone: no daily fee for cars, vans or lorries, with the money going instead into cleaner buses, taxi rules and the port (Southampton City Council, 2020). So an older car here is not being priced off the road. The Transit was a Southampton van for forty years The factory at Swaythling started life in 1939 building Spitfire parts, and from 1972 it was Ford's home for the Transit, the van that became a byword for every trade in Britain. At its peak the plant employed 4,500 people, and when the M27 was built in 1983 it pinned the site in so tightly that the paint shop had to be stacked six storeys high. More than two million Transits were built there before the last one came off the line on 26 July 2013, when production moved to Turkey and Ford stopped assembling vehicles in Britain altogether.
