Basingstoke built lorries for the British Army John Isaac Thornycroft, a naval engineer, started building steam vans in Chiswick in 1896 and moved the works to Basingstoke before the decade was out. Thornycroft went on building lorries and buses in the town until Scammell took it over, and the name finally disappeared under British Leyland in 1977.
