ULEZ, and why London scraps more cars than anywhere
Since 29 August 2023 the Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered every London borough, right out to the M25. A petrol car below Euro 4 or a diesel below Euro 6 pays £12.50 a day to move, every day of the year but Christmas Day, and the penalty for a missed payment is £180 (Transport for London, checked September 2026). For a car used every day that is more than £4,500 a year, which is why London sends us more cars than any other place in the country and why the ones it sends are so often mechanically fine. When the zone charges and the next repair bill together come to more than the car is worth as scrap, that is usually the moment to take a quote, and in London it often comes before the car has anything wrong with it.
Did you know? Vauxhall is a London car The Vauxhall Iron Works opened in 1857 on the south bank of the Thames, making pumps and marine engines in the district that gave the company its name. The first Vauxhall car was built there in 1903, a five-horsepower single-cylinder with tiller steering, and the works turned out cars for two years before the company outgrew the site and moved to Luton in 1905. The griffin on every Vauxhall badge is the emblem of Fulk le Breant, the thirteenth-century knight whose house, Fulk's Hall, gave Vauxhall its name.
