Revealed: Britain’s most scrapped cars — and the Ford Focus tops the list

The nation said goodbye to more than 40,000 cars in the past year — with £8.6 million paid out to their owners, and the average car reaching the end of the road at 18 years old.

New figures from vehicle recycling network Remove My Car, covering 40,031 cars scrapped across the UK between August 2025 and July 2026, reveal the models Britain is letting go — and what they were worth at the end.

Ford and Vauxhall dominate the scrapyard as they once dominated the showroom: between them, the two marques account for a third of every car scrapped in Britain — 6,730 Fords and 6,625 Vauxhalls in twelve months.

The average British car dies at 18

Across all 40,031 vehicles, the average car was 18.2 years old when scrapped — meaning the typical car meeting its end today rolled off the production line in 2008. The most patient owners held on far longer: the oldest car scrapped in the past year was a 1960 Rover 100, retired in Doncaster for £130, followed by a 1971 Austin Mini and a pair of classic MGBs.

At the other end of the scale, a handful of cars from 2020 or later were already scrapped — the youngest casualties of accident damage and insurance write-offs.

London’s black cabs are the most valuable cars at the scrapyard

The most valuable marque at the end of the road isn’t a luxury German brand. Retired London taxis fetched an average of £339 — more than Land Rover (£333), Jeep (£300) or Jaguar (£286). Seventy-nine black cabs reached the scrapyard during the year.

The Focus tops the list in Birmingham, Reading, Colchester and Dudley; Peterborough and Stoke are Astra country; Kent and Sheffield say goodbye to more Fiestas than anything else; and Glasgow is the Astra’s final stronghold north of the border.
