Which Car brands last longest? The longevity league from 40,000 scrapped cars
There is only one honest way to measure how long a car really lasts: the age it reaches when it is finally scrapped. A year of end-of-life data crowns the winners.

Reliability surveys ask owners how they feel. Warranty data stops at three years. But the scrapyard keeps the only complete record and across 40,031 cars scrapped in the past twelve months, the differences between brands are measured in years, not months.

Mercedes takes the crown at 20.8 years - nearly four years beyond the national average with Land Rover close behind at 20.4. The Japanese reputation holds up too: Toyota and Honda tie at 19.8. At the other end, the value brands and the French mainstream bow out earliest, with a two-to-four-year gap to the leaders.

The humble Nissan Almera - a car nobody ever called exciting outlasts everything, reaching an average of 22.3 years before the end. The Peugeot 206 and the evergreen Micra prove the same point: simple, light and cheap to fix beats prestige for sheer survival.
The early leavers
The models scrapped youngest are noticeably modern: the Peugeot 208 (12.9 years), Nissan Juke (13.7), Citroën DS3 (13.8), Vauxhall Antara (13.9) and Vauxhall Insignia (14.2). Part of that is simple arithmetic newer designs cannot yet be old but it also reflects repair economics: when a ten-year-old car needs a gearbox, the sums rarely add up, however modern it looks.

Data covers 40,031 vehicles scrapped through the Remove My Car network, 1 August 2025 – 31 July 2026. Age is measured from vehicle registration year to scrapping; averages shown where at least 150 (makes) or 80 (models) vehicles were scrapped. All vehicles were processed at Authorised Treatment Facilities in line with the End-of-Life Vehicles Regulations.
