A toll to come home, and the hills either side of it
Plymouth is a city at the end of the road. The A38 Devon Expressway is the only fast route in, the M5 stops eighty miles back at Exeter, and coming home from Cornwall means paying to cross the Tamar: the toll is charged eastbound only, into Plymouth, currently £3 for a car, half that with a Tamar Tag (Tamar Bridge and Torpoint Ferry Joint Committee, checked September 2026). There is no Clean Air Zone, so nothing charges an older car off the road. It is the geography instead: steep hills on both sides of the water, narrow lanes, and salt air off the Sound. The Tamar Bridge did something no suspension bridge had done before When it opened in 1961 the Tamar Bridge was the longest suspension bridge in Britain, 335 metres across, replacing the Saltash ferry and running alongside Brunel's railway bridge of 1859. It carries the A38 and around 40,000 vehicles a day. By the 1990s it was carrying far more than it was built for, so between 1999 and 2001 two extra lanes were hung off the sides on cantilevers. It was the first suspension bridge anywhere in the world to be widened that way, and the first to be widened and strengthened while staying open to traffic the whole time. |
