Dartford lorries carried the British Army through the First World War J & E Hall started as an iron works in Lowfield Street in 1785 and became famous for refrigeration, but from 1906 it also built commercial vehicles. They were branded Hallford, from the firm's telegraph address, a squeeze of Hall and Dartford, and the first ones were chassis for London buses. Breweries and hauliers ran fleets of them, and the Army took Hallford lorries to France in the First World War. The last was sold in 1926, after which the company turned to lifts and escalators, fitting them in Harrods and Selfridges. J & E Hall is still in Dartford today, more than two centuries after John Hall opened his forge. |
