Bournemouth, a long way from any motorway
Dorset has no motorway at all, so everything in and out of Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole runs on the A338 Wessex Way, opened in 1970 and still the one road linking the three towns (BCP Council, 2022). The Rolls in Rolls-Royce died in Bournemouth In July 1910 Bournemouth held Britain's first international flying meeting on a mile of grassland between Tuckton and Hengistbury Head, as part of the town's centenary celebrations. Charles Rolls, who six years earlier had gone into business with Henry Royce, was there with his Wright Flyer, a month after becoming the first pilot to fly the Channel there and back without landing. On 12 July, going for a spot-landing prize in front of the grandstand, the tail of his aircraft broke away and he was killed. He was 32, and the first Briton to die in a powered aircraft. A stone marking the spot sits in the corner of St Peter's School playing field in Southbourne, and there is a mural to him in a Southbourne alleyway. |
