Rolls-Royce moved to Derby because of one car The first Rolls-Royces were built in Henry Royce's works in Manchester, but the Silver Ghost sold so well that the company needed somewhere bigger. A 12-acre factory was built on Nightingale Road and opened on 9 July 1908, and the Silver Ghost was made there until 1925. Aero engines followed from 1915, and by the Second World War the plant was building Merlins for the Spitfire, Hurricane and Lancaster, camouflaged from the air to look like a housing estate. Car production moved to Crewe in 1946, the old works closed in 2008 after a century, and Rolls-Royce still builds aero engines in Derby today. |
