What Actually Happens After Your Car Is Scrapped

17 August 2026
You hand your keys to the collection driver, watch your car pull away, and for most people that is the
last thought given to it. For the vehicle, the next stretch is the busiest it has been in years.

It starts at the Authorised Treatment Facility, where the car is logged, assessed and queued for
depollution - the legally required removal of every hazardous material before a vehicle can be
crushed. This is not a quick drain-and-go job. The lead-acid battery comes out first, along with the fuel,
oils, coolant and screenwash, all hazardous if they reach soil or water, and all stored separately under
strict rules.

Airbags and seatbelt pre-tensioners need particular care. Even after deployment, many still contain
residual chemicals that classify them as hazardous waste. Tyres come off next, along with the
catalytic
converter
, which is kept whole given its value, and any switches that might contain mercury.
Once depollution is complete, what remains is an inert shell: no fluids, no batteries, no explosive
components, nothing that could contaminate the ground during the next stage. Only then is the car
considered safe to crush.

The paperwork trail most people never see

Every gram of what comes out has to be documented. Controlled waste requires a Waste Transfer
Note. Hazardous waste requires a more detailed Hazardous Waste Consignment Note carrying a
specific European Waste Catalogue code and signatures from both parties. Records are kept for two to
three years depending on the waste type.

None of this is visible to the person who handed over the keys, which is rather the point. A licensed
facility carries the documentation burden so the last keeper does not have to, and the
Certificate of
Destruction at the end is the only piece of it the owner ever sees.
