The most famous car of the 1980s was built in Belfast John DeLorean put his factory at Dunmurry, on the south west edge of Belfast, with around £100m of British government money behind it, in the hope that decent jobs would do some good during the Troubles. About 2,500 people worked there, most of them with no factory experience at all, and the first DMC-12 came off the line in January 1981. The cars were built faster than they sold, the company went into receivership in February 1982, and production stopped before the year was out. Roughly 9,000 were made. Back to the Future came out in 1985, three years too late to save any of it, and the original test track at Dunmurry is still there. |
