In October 1911 Ford opened its first factory outside North America in an old tram works at Trafford Park, beside the Ship Canal, to assemble the Model T. Three years later it became the first plant in Britain with a moving assembly line, turning out 21 cars an hour, and by the early 1920s around four in ten cars registered in the country were Fords.
More than 300,000 vehicles were built at Trafford Park before Ford moved car production to Dagenham in 1931, and in the Second World War the same site turned out Merlin engines for the Spitfire and the Lancaster.
