Colchester is Britain's oldest recorded town and the centre still follows the lines the Romans left, so a lot of local driving is slow work: narrow streets inside the walls, tight parking and a lot of manoeuvring. The engines in the InterCity 125 were built in Colchester Paxman built diesel engines at the Hythe works in Colchester from the 1860s onwards, and in 1972 delivered the first two Valenta engines for British Rail's new High Speed Train. A year later, with a Colchester engine in each power car, the prototype set a world speed record for diesel traction at 143 mph. In November 1987 a production InterCity 125 beat it again at 148 mph, a record for a diesel passenger train that still stands. The last engine left the Colchester works in 2003, but the trains that carried those engines ran on British main lines for more than forty years. |
