Norwich is the largest city in Britain with no motorway anywhere near it, and the road south only became dual carriageway the whole way in December 2014, when the nine-mile Elveden section finally opened after roughly forty years of campaigning (Highways Agency, 12 December 2014). That is the shape of driving here: long runs on the A11 and A47, market-town high streets at either end, and no Clean Air Zone to charge anyone off the road. Lotus builds cars on a wartime runway outside Norwich In July 1966 Colin Chapman laid the foundation stone for a new Lotus factory at Hethel, eight miles south west of Norwich, with the racing driver Jim Clark standing beside him. The site was RAF Hethel, an American bomber base in the Second World War, sold off by the Air Ministry in 1964. The first cars came off the line in early 1967. Lotus is still there. The test track is built from the old perimeter road and two and a half miles of the original runway, and the wartime control tower is now the company's driving academy. Jim Clark, Mario Andretti, Emerson Fittipaldi and Ayrton Senna have all driven it. |
