The charge Cambridge decided against
Cambridge came close to charging drivers to enter the city. The Greater Cambridge Partnership spent two years on a Sustainable Travel Zone, a £5 weekday charge expected to raise around £26m a year for buses, and dropped it in September 2023 after 58 per cent of people who responded opposed it (Greater Cambridge Partnership, September 2023). So there is no charge and no Clean Air Zone here. What there is instead is a small medieval city with very high traffic, park and ride sites on every approach, and a lot of short cold journeys that never get an engine properly warm. That is the pattern that wears out exhausts and batteries. When the next repair bill is more than the car is worth as scrap, that is usually the moment to take a quote.
Did you know? Cambridge's biggest engineering firm started as a chauffeur service David Gregory Marshall opened a chauffeur hire business in Cambridge on 1 October 1909, with one car. It grew into a garage, then a driving school, then an aerodrome: Marshall bought farmland at Teversham in 1937 and opened Cambridge Airport there the following year. The company has stayed in the same family ever since and now maintains military transport aircraft, having trained thousands of wartime pilots along the way. It announced it will leave the Cambridge site by 2027, ending nearly ninety years on the airfield, though the family still owns the land. |

Scrapping a car in Cambridge
