A fine rather than a charge, in the city centre
Aberdeen has enforced a Low Emission Zone since 1 June 2024, covering the middle of the city around Union Street and Market Street. As in Glasgow and Edinburgh there is no daily charge to pay: a petrol car below Euro 4 or a diesel below Euro 6 that enters simply gets a £60 penalty, doubling on each further trip (Aberdeen City Council, checked September 2026). So an older car is not expensive to run here, it is just shut out of the centre. Add North Sea salt on everything and the winters this far north, and the bodywork usually gives up before the engine. When the zone and the next repair bill together come to more than the car is worth as scrap, that is usually the moment to take a quote.
Did you know? Aberdeen got a bypass forty years after it was first proposed The Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route runs 26 miles around the west of the city, from Stonehaven in the south to Blackdog in the north. It had been argued about since the 1950s, was finally approved after a public inquiry, and cost around three quarters of a billion pounds. Most of it opened through 2018, but the final stretch by the River Don was held up by concrete problems and by the collapse of the contractor Carillion, so the full road did not open until 19 February 2019. It took traffic off Anderson Drive for the first time in decades. |
Aberdeen in our records
Our Aberdeen records go back to 2014 and run to 116 vehicles, the Ford Focus more often than anything else. The oldest car we have ever collected in the AB postcodes was a 1988 Nissan Bluebird Gs, a model Nissan stopped selling here not long afterwards.
Our own completed collections, AB postcodes, from August 2014. Updated quarterly.
Scrapping a car in Aberdeen
Your car goes to a licensed Authorised Treatment Facility, regulated in Scotland by SEPA, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency, and you receive a Certificate of Destruction confirming it has been legally recycled. Cash payment for scrap vehicles is banned by law, so payment is made by bank transfer, typically the same day, and the DVLA is notified as standard. The whole sequence is covered in the five steps to scrapping a car, and why people choose us explains the guarantee behind the price. If the car is off the road, the take-back page covers non-runners.
