The zone with no charge to pay
Dundee began enforcing its Low Emission Zone on 30 May 2024, the first of the Scottish cities to switch on that year. Like the rest of Scotland it works by penalty rather than charge: there is no daily fee, and a non-compliant car entering the zone gets £60, doubling each time after that (Dundee City Council, checked September 2026). Nothing here makes an old car expensive to own, then. It is the coast that does the damage, salt off the Tay and the North Sea working on sills and brake lines through every winter. When the zone and the next repair bill together come to more than the car is worth as scrap, that is usually the moment to take a quote.
Did you know? Dundee made tyres for half a century Michelin opened in Dundee in 1971 and the plant spent forty-nine years making car tyres, specialising in sixteen inch and smaller sizes. At the end it employed around 845 people and was one of the biggest private employers in the city. Cheaper imports from Asia took the small-tyre market, and Michelin announced the closure in November 2018. The last Dundee tyre was made on 23 March 2020, earlier than planned because of the pandemic, and the site is now being redeveloped as a low carbon energy park. |
