A low emission zone that only applies to buses
Brighton has had a Low Emission Zone since 1 January 2015, but it is an unusual one: it covers Castle Square, North Street and part of Western Road, and it applies to buses rather than cars. Those streets carry almost every bus movement in the city, which is where the pollution was coming from, so the council set an emissions standard for buses and left private cars alone (Brighton and Hove City Council). Nothing charges an older car here. What wears them out is the city itself: salt air off the Channel, parking so tight that every wing eventually gets kerbed, and the climb up from the seafront in every direction. British motoring was born on the road into Brighton On 14 November 1896 the Locomotives on Highways Act came into force, raising the speed limit for light vehicles from 4 mph to 14 and ending the requirement for a man to walk ahead of every car. To celebrate, 33 cars set out from London for Brighton that morning, and a red flag was symbolically torn up at the start. Only about half of them made it. The Emancipation Run has been re-enacted every November since 1927, and it is now the longest running motoring event in the world: several hundred cars, all built before 1905, leaving Hyde Park at dawn on the first Sunday of November and finishing on Madeira Drive. The red flag still gets torn up. |
