The city that decided it did not need a charging zone
Coventry was told in 2018 to plan a Class D Clean Air Zone, the kind that charges private cars, and argued its way out of it. The council put forward a package of road engineering, cleaner buses and fleet upgrades instead, and in February 2020 the government wrote to confirm the city did not need to charge drivers at all (Coventry City Council, February 2020). So an older car is not priced off the road here. What wears one out is ordinary Coventry driving: the ring road with its twenty exits in two miles, a lot of short journeys, and the queues in and out at either end of the day. When the next repair bill is more than the car is worth as scrap, that is usually the moment to take a quote.

Daimler built the country's first production car in Coventry in 1897, and at the peak the city carried Jaguar, Triumph, Rover, Hillman, Humber, Riley, Alvis and more. The Standard-Triumph works at Canley and the Rootes plant at Ryton were the two that most Coventry families worked in or knew someone at. Ryton built more than 1.3 million cars before Peugeot closed it in 2006, about half of them for export. Canley's line stopped in 1980.
