Doncaster, the town the motorways meet at
Doncaster has had a motorway longer than almost anywhere in Britain. The Doncaster Bypass opened in July 1961 as the first stretch of the A1(M), only three years after the country's first motorway at Preston, and it still runs on the same two lanes each way today (National Highways; Great North Road history). The M18 followed from 1967 and the M180 after that, which is why so much of the town's driving is fast dual carriageway and motorway rather than town-centre crawl. That kind of use is easy on a clutch and hard on everything else: tyres, wheel bearings, suspension and the mileage itself, so a Doncaster car tends to arrive at the end of its life worn out rather than broken. When the next bill is more than the car is worth as scrap, that is usually the moment to take a quote.
Did you know? The fastest steam engine in the world was built in DoncasterThe Plant Works by Doncaster station built both of Britain's most famous locomotives. Flying Scotsman rolled out in 1923 and became the first steam engine officially recorded at 100 mph. Mallard followed in March 1938 and on 3 July that year, coming down Stoke Bank near Grantham with a Doncaster driver at the controls, it reached 126 mph.
No steam locomotive anywhere has gone faster since. Mallard sits in the National Railway Museum in York, 40 minutes up the line from the town that built it, and the Plant still refurbishes trains today under Wabtec.
Doncaster in our records
Doncaster has scrapped 12,419 vehicles with us since 2014. It could hardly be closer this year: 74 Ford Fiestas to 71 Ford Focus. All-time, the Ford Focus is Doncaster's most scrapped car, at 748. Old cars dominate the intake: 81 per cent of the past year's local collections had passed fifteen.
A 2014 Nissan Qashqai Acenta Dci took the year's best local price, at £800. The oldest vehicle we have ever collected here was a 1976 Volvo 66 Gl. Out-of-the-ordinary cars have a habit of earning out-of-the-ordinary quotes.
Model counts and records: Remove My Car completed collections, DN postcodes. All-time figures from August 2014; yearly figures to August 2026. Updated quarterly.
Scrapping a car in Doncaster
Your car goes to a licensed Authorised Treatment Facility, regulated by the Environment Agency, and you receive a Certificate of Destruction confirming it has been legally recycled. Cash payment for scrap vehicles is banned by law, so payment is made by bank transfer, typically the same day, and the DVLA is notified as standard. The whole sequence is covered in the five steps to scrapping a car, and how the service works explains the guarantee behind the price.
