A fine, not a charge, since June 2024
Edinburgh has enforced a Low Emission Zone across the city centre since 1 June 2024, and like Glasgow it works differently from the English schemes: there is no daily charge you can pay. A petrol car below Euro 4 or a diesel below Euro 6 that enters the zone gets a £60 penalty, doubling on each further trip to a maximum of £480, and the zone runs every hour of every day (City of Edinburgh Council, checked September 2026). So an older car here is not expensive to drive, it is simply barred from the middle of the city. Add the cobbles, the hills and the winter salt off the Forth, and cars reach us sound but stranded. When the zone and the next repair bill together come to more than the car is worth as scrap, that is usually the moment to take a quote.
Did you know? Britain's oldest surviving car factory is in Granton, and it built electric cars William Peck, Edinburgh's City Astronomer, founded the Madelvic Motor Carriage Company and opened a factory at Granton in 1898 to build electric cars. The Madelvic Brougham looked like a horse carriage and was driven by a fifth wheel mounted behind the front axle, and shafts could be fitted so a horse could take over if the batteries died. There was a test track on the roof. Madelvic won a contract to carry mail between the General Post Office and Leith, but electric cars lost to petrol and the company failed in 1900, after two years. The building is still there, listed, and is reckoned to be the oldest surviving purpose-built car factory in Britain. One of its apprentices, Henry Alexander, drove a Model T to the summit of Ben Nevis in 1911. |
