Liverpool has no Clean Air Zone, so nothing charges an older car for being old. What it does have is the Mersey: every road crossing to the Wirral is tolled, currently £2.40 for a car in the Queensway and Kingsway tunnels, less for residents with a T-Flow account (Merseytravel, checked September 2026). Teams started from both banks in 1925 and 1926 and met under the river in 1928, out by less than three centimetres. Seventeen of the 1,700 men who built it were killed. The spoil, more than a million tons of rock and clay, became Otterspool Promenade. King George V opened it on 18 July 1934 in front of 200,000 people and called it a miracle. At just over two miles it was the longest underwater tunnel in the world, a title it held for years, and it is still the longest road tunnel in the UK. Around 35,000 vehicles use it every day. |
