Did you know? Newcastle built luxury cars before Coventry did Armstrong Whitworth, the great Tyneside engineering firm, started building cars at Scotswood in 1904 and launched its own design, the 28/36, in 1906. They were expensive, well engineered machines from a company better known for warships and bridges, and they sold to people who could afford both. In 1919 Armstrong Whitworth bought Siddeley-Deasy and the car business moved to Coventry as Armstrong Siddeley, which carried on until 1960. One of the Newcastle-built cars survives and is on display at the Discovery Museum, a mile from where it was made. |
