A town built for cars, forty years ago
Telford was designated a new town in 1963 as Dawley, renamed in 1968 after the engineer Thomas Telford, and built the way new towns were: distributor roads, roundabouts instead of junctions, and estates strung along them. Abraham Darby III cast it at Coalbrookdale and threw it across the Severn between 1777 and 1779: 378 tons of iron in a single 100-foot span, opened on New Year's Day 1781. Nobody had built anything of that size in iron before, and the village that grew around it simply took the bridge's name.
