The first car to reach 200 mph was built in Wolverhampton Sunbeam built it at the Moorfield works in 1927: four tons, twenty-five feet long, and two 22.5-litre aero engines with the driver sitting between them. It was called the 1000hp, though it actually made about 900, and the crews called it the Slug. There was nowhere in Europe long enough to run it, so it went to Daytona Beach, where on 29 March 1927 Henry Segrave averaged 203.79 mph in front of 30,000 people. It was the first car ever to pass 200. The National Motor Museum finished a three-year restoration of it in June 2026, and plans to run it at Daytona again on the hundredth anniversary in March 2027. |
