Get a quote for the same car two months apart and the figure may well have changed, even though nothing about the car has. That is not a buyer trying it on. Scrap prices are a direct reflection of global metal markets, and those markets move more than most people realise — sometimes by double digits in a single month.
The short answer: scrap car prices change because they track four things that never stop moving — world steel prices, the precious metals inside your catalytic converter, the pound's exchange rate, and the cost of the diesel that collects and hauls the metal. On top of all four sit wars, sanctions and trade policy. Your car is the only fixed part of the equation.
Steel: the number can swing 10% in weeks
Steel is the biggest single driver, because a car is mostly steel by weight. There is no single worldwide price for scrap steel — the number everyone in the industry watches is the price Turkish steel mills are paying, because Turkey buys more scrap steel from abroad than almost anyone else, and what its mills will pay sets the tone for everyone selling it. That price hit around $418 a tonne in early April 2026 — up more than 11% in a single month, and 12.5% higher than a year earlier. UK scrap yards typically pay somewhere in the £150–£250 per tonne range for the everyday steel that makes up most of a car, and their prices follow that global number. A month when Turkish mills are buying heavily is a month when UK yards can afford to pay more — and a quiet month is the opposite.
Precious metals: wildest mover in the quote
The catalytic converter adds a second layer entirely, and it has the most dramatic price history of anything in the quote. Rhodium — one of three precious metals inside a converter, alongside platinum and palladium — peaked at nearly $30,000 an ounce in 2021, then crashed more than 80% to under $5,000 by late 2024. It has since climbed back into five figures, and even within 2026 alone it has swung more than 10% in a single month. Platinum and palladium move less violently, but neither stands still. That is why a quote that includes the converter can shift noticeably even in a month when steel has not moved at all — the steel and the converter are priced on completely separate markets.
The pound: the part nobody thinks about
All of the above is priced in dollars on world markets, which means the pound's exchange rate sits on top of everything. The pound fell from around $1.38 to $1.31 between January and June 2026 — a move of more than 5% on its own. A weaker pound makes UK scrap cheaper for overseas buyers, so demand picks up and prices at home can rise even when nothing in the metal markets has moved at all. It is one reason two quotes taken a few weeks apart can differ even when steel and rhodium have both stood still.
Fuel: the cost side of every quote
There is one more moving part that has nothing to do with what the metal sells for: what it costs to move it. Every scrapped car has to be collected by a truck running on diesel, and once processed, the metal has to be hauled again — to mills, to ports, onward to buyers. And diesel has had a wild year of its own: UK prices jumped around 25p a litre in just three weeks in March 2026 when conflict in the Middle East disrupted oil supplies, then fell by almost 17p in June — the biggest monthly drop the RAC has recorded since it began tracking prices in 2000. Every one of those swings changes what collection and haulage cost, and that cost comes out of the same pot the quote comes from.
Wars, politics and everything upstream
Sitting above all of it is the layer nobody can forecast: world events. Russia's invasion of Ukraine is the clearest recent example — both countries were significant steel exporters, and the war disrupted supply while sanctions redrew who buys from whom. It also sent energy prices sharply higher, which matters more than it first appears: melting and re-processing scrap is energy-hungry work, and expensive gas and electricity squeeze what mills can afford to pay for the raw material.
The precious metals inside the converter have their own version of this. Russia is one of the world's largest palladium producers, so sanctions risk alone can move that market. Most of the world's rhodium comes out of South Africa, which is why supply problems there helped drive the 2021 spike to nearly $30,000 an ounce — instability at a handful of mines moved the value of converters on driveways across Britain.
Politics moves the market in quieter ways too. Tariffs and trade rules can shift demand for UK scrap overnight if a big importing country raises barriers or protects its own mills. And stricter emissions rules around the world mean more precious metal loaded into each new converter, which keeps demand for rhodium, platinum and palladium propped up years after the rules are passed.
The thread running through all of it: none of this has anything to do with your car. The same Fiesta on the same driveway is worth different amounts depending on a mine in South Africa, a war in Europe, and a tariff decision made thousands of miles away.
What to do with that
Trying to time the market is a mug's game, and people who do it professionally get it wrong regularly — steel, precious metals, currency and fuel do not move together, so waiting for "the right month" on all four at once is not really a strategy. The useful conclusion is narrower: a figure you were quoted a few months ago tells you very little about today, so get a current quote rather than working from memory.
