Bristol: a Clean Air Zone and the second-worst traffic in Britain
Bristol has both problems at once. The Clean Air Zone in the centre has charged non-compliant cars £9 a day since 28 November 2022, a Class D zone like Birmingham's, so private cars pay, and the council voted late in 2025 not to raise it (Bristol City Council; RAC, 2026). Outside the zone, the INRIX 2025 scorecard ranks Bristol the second most congested city in the UK, with the typical driver losing 64 hours a year to traffic, behind only London. An older diesel in Bristol is therefore paying to enter the centre and crawling to get there, and that combination of a daily charge and stop-start wear is what tips a lot of otherwise sound cars over. When the zone charges and the next repair bill together come to more than the car is worth as scrap, that is usually the moment to take a quote.
Did you know? Bristol made cars out of aeroplanes In 1945 the Bristol Aeroplane Company at Filton needed something to build after the war and started making cars. The first, the Bristol 400 of 1947, was built around pre-war BMW designs taken as reparations, and every Bristol after it was hand-built in tiny numbers with aircraft-grade attention: wood, leather, and a spare wheel hidden in the front wing. Bristol Cars never had a dealer network, just one showroom on Kensington High Street, and never published sales figures. It went into administration in 2011, was revived briefly, and was finally wound up in 2020. The Filton runway where the cars were tested is now a housing estate, and the last Concorde sits at the end of it. |

Our Bristol story: 100km for the children's hospital

In September 2021 ten of us from Remove My Car each ran 10km over the course of a month, 100km between us, to raise money for The Grand Appeal, the Bristol Children's Hospital charity. The total came to £10,349.79, and we handed the cheque over outside Bristol Royal Hospital for Children on 27 September 2021.
The Grand Appeal pays for the equipment, the family accommodation and the arts and music that the NHS budget does not stretch to at Bristol Children's Hospital, which treats children from across the South West and South Wales.
The charity is best known for the Gromit Unleashed trails that fill the city with sculptures every few years, and it has raised tens of millions for the hospital since 1995.
Every car we have collected from Bristol since has, in a small way, been part of it.
