The A9, and what Scottish miles do to a car
The A9 between Perth and Inverness is the road that shapes driving in half the country, and most of it is still single carriageway. Of the 83 miles being upgraded, around 11 are dual carriageway today and another 11 are under construction, with the Scottish Government committed to finishing the job by the end of 2035 at a cost of £3.9 billion (Transport Scotland, 2026). Until then, a Scottish car outside the central belt does long miles on two-lane roads, in weather, on salt, with a lot of overtaking and a lot of braking. That is a life that finishes cars through corrosion and simple mileage rather than city wear. When the next repair bill is more than the car is worth as scrap, that is usually the moment to take a quote, and it makes no difference to us whether the car is in Paisley or Portree.
Did you know? Scotland built its own answer to the MiniOn 2 May 1963 the Duke of Edinburgh opened the Rootes factory at Linwood, near Paisley, and the first Hillman Imp came off the line: rear-engined, all-aluminium, and the first car built in Scotland in 35 years. At its height Linwood employed 11,000 people, and around 440,000 Imps were made there.
It never made a profit. Rootes passed to Chrysler, then to Peugeot-Talbot, and on 11 February 1981 the plant closed with nearly 5,000 jobs lost. No car has been mass-produced in Scotland since, and Linwood earned its place in the lyrics of The Proclaimers alongside Bathgate and Methil.
