Bradford has had a Clean Air Zone since 26 September 2022, covering everything inside the outer ring road and out along the Aire valley to Shipley and Saltaire. It is a Class C scheme, so private cars and motorbikes are never charged, whatever they emit; the daily charge falls on older taxis, vans, buses and lorries (Bradford Council, checked September 2026). Bradford built its own car for nearly fifty years Two brothers, Benjamin and William Jowett, went from a cycle works to building engines, then designed their first car in 1906 and began making them at Idle, on the north edge of Bradford. Jowetts were small, tough and economical, sold on the slogan the little engine with the big pull, and by 1927 the factory was turning out more than 3,000 a year. After the war came the Bradford van, which half the tradesmen in Yorkshire seemed to own, and then the Javelin, a flat-four saloon well ahead of its time. Over-optimism on the Javelin finished the company: production stopped in 1953 and Jowett wound itself up in 1954, paying every creditor in full. Its owners' club, founded in 1923, is still going. |
