Did you know? The diesel engine grew up in Peterborough
In June 1932 Frank Perkins and engineer Charles Chapman set up F. Perkins Ltd in a small office on Queen Street to do something the motor industry thought was a bad idea: put a high-speed diesel in a car. Their first engine, the Vixen, ran for the first time that autumn, and by 1935 a Perkins diesel had set speed records at 95 mph.
The company moved to its Eastfield works in 1947 and it is still there, now part of Caterpillar, having built more than 22 million engines in its lifetime. Above the original entrance is the founder's motto, carved in stone: where there is no vision, the people perish.
