The A3, and what Surrey miles do to a car
Guildford sits on the A3, the London to Portsmouth road, and the town has spent a century being shaped by it. The last set of traffic lights on the whole route disappeared only in July 2011, when the Hindhead Tunnel opened a few miles south: 1.2 miles long, the longest road tunnel in Britain outside an estuary crossing, built to take the A3 under the Devil's Punch Bowl (National Highways, 2011). The first purpose-built car factory in Britain is a Guildford pub John and Raymond Dennis started out selling bicycles from a shop on Guildford High Street in 1895, built their first motor vehicle in 1898 and their first car in 1901. That year they commissioned a three-storey factory on the corner of Bridge Street and Onslow Street, with showrooms on the ground floor and workshops above. It is reckoned to be the first purpose-built motor vehicle factory in Britain, and possibly anywhere. Dennis stopped making cars in 1913 and turned to buses, lorries and fire engines, and its successor still builds buses in Guildford today.
