Birmingham's Clean Air Zone and the older car
Birmingham has run a Clean Air Zone since June 2021, and it is the strictest type in the country, a Class D zone that charges private cars as well as vans and lorries. Anything inside the A4540 Middleway ring road is covered, every day of the year, and a petrol car below Euro 4 or a diesel below Euro 6 pays £8 a day to drive in (Birmingham City Council, checked September 2026). Did you know? Birmingham built the original Mini The Longbridge works opened in 1905 under Herbert Austin and grew into one of the biggest car factories in Europe. By the late 1960s around 25,000 people worked there, and the cars that came off the line included the Austin Seven, the Metro and the original 1959 Mini. Volume production ended in April 2005 when MG Rover went into administration with around 6,000 jobs lost, and the last cars were assembled there in 2016.
