The D Road, and what it does to a Potteries car
Stoke is one of the few cities in Britain with a fast road running right through the middle of it. The A500, the Potteries D Road, was begun in 1962 to link the six towns to the M6 at junctions 15 and 16 and was not finished in its present form until 2006; by 2004 it was already carrying around 60,000 vehicles a day (Highways Agency figures, via the A500 record). That gives a Stoke car an unusual life: fast dual carriageway for the trunk of the journey, then steep, tight streets through Hanley, Burslem and Longton at either end, which is harder on brakes and clutches than motorway miles ever are.
